Genetic testing is an important step forward in the implementation of personalized medicine
Genetic testing allows clinicians to obtain more detailed information about and more accurately diagnose a patient’s disease. While oncology has been leading the field of genetic testing, other applications are also seeing benefits such as the diagnosis of orphan disease and
the pre-natal diagnosis of rare diseases.
The potential applications for genetic testing
will continue to grow as new technologies
become available. The decreasing cost of next- generation sequencing is allowing institutions to conduct genetic testing on patient samples in-house. CRISPR technology is also being developed that produces a real-time signal when it detects specific disease-associated nucleic acids.
